To prepare an authentic Dark 'n' Stormy, only one brand of dark rum is acceptable. This is not only because Gosling's in Bermuda has trademarked the renowned drink.

It is also because the taste of their Black Seal Rum is distinctly different from other dark rums. Combined with ginger beer over ice, the complex flavours create the Dark 'n' Stormy, a beverage that is simple to make and easy to drink.

According to Jonathan Miles in a July 5, 2009 article in The New York Times, the Gosling family has filed trademark certificates with the United States Patent and Trademark Office in order to protect the reputation and ensure the consistent quality of Bermuda's National Drink.

A Brief History of the Gosling's in Bermuda

In 1806, James Gosling arrived in St. George's, Bermuda by accident, enroute to America from England. However, he decided to stay and subsequently opened a shop in that town.

His brother Ambrose moved the store to Front Street in Bermuda's new capital, Hamilton in 1824. It has been in operation at that location ever since.

How Black Seal Rum Was Named

The Gosling's laboured for three years to perfect their formula for dark rum. It was finally available for sale around 1858. It was stored in large wooden barrels at the shop and patrons usually supplied their own containers.

Only later was the rum sold by the bottle, decanted into champagne bottles discarded by British officers, and the corks were sealed with black wax.

It wasn't long before customers began to request the popular rum with "the black seal," and the nickname evolved into today's logo of a black seal juggling a wooden barrel.

Variation on Gosling's Dark'n'Stormy Rum Cocktail Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 3/4 oz. Gosling's Black Seal Rum
  • quality ginger beer
  • ice
  • optional fresh lime wedge

Directions:

  1. Fill a tall glass with ice
  2. Add rum and top with ginger beer
  3. Squeeze lime into glass and stir briefly to blend

Creates one Dark 'n' Stormy.

Though Gosling's recipe does not specify a particular ginger beer, their website does promote their own brand, Stormy Ginger Beer.

Visitors to Bermuda will often be served a wedge of lime with this iconic drink. It adds a splash of colour and a pleasant citrus zing.

Recipe for Bermuda Rum Swizzle

Another popular drink in Bermuda is Rum Swizzle.

Cooking with Black Seal Rum

Gosling's Black Seal Rum is an essential ingredient for another island favourite, Bermuda Fish Chowder. It provides both a memorable mellow taste and an alcoholic kick to a traditional dish.
