  • Small stockpot
  • Kitchen knife

Makes:

About 2 liters.

Preparation – 15 min

A Simple Syrup

The recipe for a basic simple syrup is just that, simple. The ratio is one to one, for each cup of sugar match it with a cup of water. The syrup is a great addition to many drink mixes and can be incorporated into baking as well.

To make a simple syrup add the 1 cup of water to a small stockpot over medium heat. Immediately add the 1 cup of sugar and stir. Once the sugar dissolves completely turn the heat up and boil for about 3 minutes. When the syrup is finished it can be kept in the refrigerator for about a month if there is extra left over.

Squeeze a few Lemons

First wash the lemons, as the rind will be used. Grate 1 lemon and reserve the zest. As an optional garnish use the rind of another lemon to create lemon twists, use a vegetable peeler along the length of the lemon and then twist the strips of rind and reserve for later. Using a lemon reamer or juicer extract the juice of 6 lemons. Strain the lemon juice to remove any seeds and then set aside.

Pour the sparkling water into the pitcher and then add all of the lemon juice. Give the mixture a quick stir and allow the drink to settle, it may be frothy. Stir in reserved lemon zest. Slowly add the simple syrup according to taste, adding the full amount for a sweeter and less tart lemonade. Refrigerate and serve cold for the best taste.

Serving

Serve the lemonade in glasses half filled with ice. Cut the final lemon into thin slices and add a couple of fresh slices into each glass. Finally garnish each glass of lemonade with a twist over the edge.

This Home Made Lemonade is fresh and pairs well with several different meals.
